The story of light’s victory over darkness
“And God said, ‘Let there be light!’ And there was … light!!!” Ever since the most powerful C major chord in musical history sent a shiver down the spines of the Viennese audience at its premiere, Haydn’s “The Creation” has told the eternal story of the victory of light over darkness time and time again. The greatest oratorio of the Viennese Classical period is not a naive illustration of the story of creation, but a work that embodies the spirit of the Enlightenment. When performed with such dramatic intensity as Patrick Hahn does with the Festival Orchestra and the Camerata Styria, there can be no doubt about the message of Haydn’s music.
