Senses hike: Rettenbach - Mariatrost

Rippling water, shady forests, blossoming orchards, and sweeping views characterize this varied hike east of Graz. An atmospheric trail that combines lush nature and panoramic views.

Especially on hot summer days, a detour to the Rettenbachklamm gorge is recommended. The shady and cool path is a blessing and there is plenty to discover in the small pools and streams. Once you have crossed the gorge, you follow the path through orchards up to the Stephanienwarte. The observation tower, which is named after the wife of Crown Prince Rudolph, Stephanie of Belgium, was opened in 1880 and can be seen as a counterpart to the Rudolfswarte on the Buchkogel.

It is recommended to arrive by public transport!

Getting there: Tram line 1 from Hauptplatz to the Waldhof stop

Getting back: Tram line 1 from Mariatrost

Arrival by car: Via the A2 or A9 freeway you can get directly to the provincial capital Graz.

The starting point is at the tram stop Waldhof Rettenbachklamm, easily accessible from the main square via tram line 1. After crossing Mariatrosterstraße, the Steingrabenweg leads directly into the shady Rettenbachklamm gorge. Following the rushing stream, the path winds its way through the narrow ravine over roots and stones. The trail is generally well-maintained, but requires sturdy footwear and sure footing, as some sections can be slippery. On warm days, the cool gorge offers a welcome respite from the heat.

At the end of the gorge, the forest thins out and the trail continues towards Platte and the Stephanienwarte lookout tower. Passing a horse paddock, you'll reach the Pölzer family's orchard. The chirping of crickets, the scent of Christmas trees, and a touch of Mediterranean flair accompany you along the way. The trail then climbs steeply through the forest up to the Stephanienwarte. Clearly visible markers reliably guide the way. At the top, an impressive panoramic view of Graz and the surrounding area unfolds. Those with energy to spare can climb up to the viewing platform.

The return route leads towards the Mariatrost Basilica. Along the way, you'll pass the fenced deer pasture belonging to the Hopfer family before reaching Mariatrosterstraße again. From here, you can either take a detour to the basilica or return directly to the tram stop.

Good hiking boots are recommended for this tour!

Definitely worth a visit:

In the old town of Graz, you are spoiled for choice: Should the car be parked in one of the numerous underground car parks, in the blue zone in the city centre or at a park-and-ride (P&R) site.
