David Byrne – True Stories
Film Screening

Few films have shaped the playful, postmodern aesthetic of the 1980s as much as the 1986 underground classic True Stories. The satirical comedy musical by Talking Heads frontman David Byrne is a parody of small-town America, the American Dream and consumer culture. Everyday life blends with nostalgia and longing, creating a deliberately kitschy aesthetic that also resonates in Katherine Bernhardt's work.

In the film, Byrne visits the fictional town of Virgil, Texas, during its 150th anniversary celebration, known as the "Celebration of Specialness". Through a surreal lens, the film satirises small-town life and takes the absurdities of everyday American culture in the 1980s to extremes. Combining kitsch, absurd humour and a disarmingly warm-hearted, dreamlike vision of Americana, it creates a quirky yet affectionate portrait of American society.
