Stiegenkirche
Closed until further notice!
The oldest parish church in Graz was first mentioned in a historical document in 1343. Known chiefly as a church for students, it lies in the historic centre of Graz close up against the southern side of the Schlossberg, concealed behind the heavy walls of a former Augustinian monastery.
Good to know
The Stiegenkirche is located at Sporgasse 21 in Graz’s Old Town. Its entrance is easy to miss and is reached via a distinctive flight of steps leading up to the church. Thanks to its hidden location, it is one of the most unusual sights in the UNESCO World Heritage city of Graz.
The church takes its name from the characteristic staircase (Stiege in German) that leads from Sporgasse to the entrance. As the church is hidden behind the row of buildings and its entrance is located on an upper level, it is one of Graz’s most unusual church buildings.
No. The Stiegenkirche is currently closed until further notice. Since the church became privately owned in mid-2024, it is not yet clear when, or to what extent, it will once again be open to the public.
