Lurgrotte Cave Semriach

The Lurgrotte extends for around 5 kilometres and offers visitors a fascinating underground landscape. A well-maintained path leads through the cave, past impressive stalactites and stalagmites, underground rivers and lakes, as well as enormous natural chambers.

One of the highlights of the Lurgrotte Semriach is the so-called “Great Dome”, an enormous cavern measuring up to 40 metres in height and around 100 metres in length. Concerts and other events are regularly held here, offering a truly unique atmosphere.

The cave is open all year round and is also well worth visiting during the winter months, as the temperature inside remains constant at around 9°C throughout the year. In summer, the cave offers a welcome escape from the heat, while in winter it provides shelter from the cold.

Visitors to the Lurgrotte Semriach can choose from various guided tours led by experienced guides. Special tours for children are also available, allowing younger visitors to discover the secrets of the cave in a fun and engaging way.

The combination of nature, adventure and history makes the cave a fascinating experience for visitors of all ages.

Did you know? During thunderstorms, the water level inside the cave can rise very quickly. Today, a modern warning system is in place. In 1894, however, seven experienced cave explorers were trapped inside the Lurgrotte by sudden flooding and were not rescued until nine days later. Another flood in 1975 destroyed the passage connecting the Peggau and Semriach sections of the Lurgrotte, which has remained inaccessible ever since.
